Essential Reading Tips
Essential Reading Tips
Hello,
This is Teacher Ben at E52. Below are some tips to help you out while reading anything in English, whether that is a novel or a textbook. Try these out next time you pick up a book and see what you think!
1. Look Up Unfamiliar Words
Whenever you come across new or unknown words, feel free to stop your reading and look up the vocabulary, either online or in a dictionary. It is helpful to make a list of these words from the book and keep track of them. This can be a great way of expanding your vocabulary and seeing words in context - also, if you are wondering how to say the word, you can look up the pronunciation on Google.
2. Scan the Reading
Scanning or skimming the text before diving in can give you a general idea of what the text will be about and what to expect. That way, you can have specific ideas or questions in mind that guide your reading and help keep you focused.
3. Summarize or paraphrase the text
It’s good to get in the practice of taking what you’ve read and trying to explain it in your own words. Try to get the gist of the writing and explain it in a few sentences, keeping in mind ways to simplify the ideas to make them clear and easy to comprehend.
4. Talk about the reading with friends
One great way to not only understand the text but also make you excited to read it is to read it at the same time as your friends. That way, you can discuss your opinions or impressions of the reading as well as check with others for understanding if a section is particularly confusing or hard to grasp. You can even turn it into a casual book club and make your readings part of your regular routine!
Feel free to post anything else that you try to keep yourself engaged while reading for study or for fun.
Cheers,
Ben at E52
